Positive characteristics of good friends

To all my real friends out there who are apart of my life I dedicate this to you. Love you all!

Think of a time when you were going through a difficult situation. Did you ever feel confident you have friends that have your back, no matter what? Only to realize the number of friends you thought you had could be counted with one hand…ouch

Let’s be honest here. Is your circle of close-knit friends the same number you have on your social media page? Hell NOoOOoo…. You know you’re lying if you say yes. Unless your Oprah, then I want to be your friend too.

There are dozens of characteristics of a good (or real) friend. To know those characteristics you must practice them as well. Practice what you look for in a true friend. WORD

HONESTY

A good friend tells you what you need to hear, NOT what you want to hear. It’s so easy to get caught up in…. “I don’t want to hurt their feelings,” but a true friend doesn’t care to hurt your feelings! They give you the raw 411. Your breath is kicking?  You look fat in those jeans? Yes, you better believe it your TRUE friend will let you know. Do you really think they are going to let you out the house looking like death? I think not! It’s a harsh reality that will make you think twice about a dumb decision you might make. Take the advice or leave it, but know this…your friend always has your best interest at heart.

” BEING HONEST MAY NOT GET YOU A LOT OF FRIENDS BUT IT’LL ALWAYS GET YOU THE RIGHT ONES.” – John Lennon

DEPENDABILITY

Is defined as the quality of being able to be counted on or relied upon. When you always do everything that you say you will and never make promises you cannot keep. For me, this is so vital in a friendship. If your friends can’t be there for you through the bad why be there only for the good? Who is really benefiting in the friendship you or them? Everyone needs at least someone that they can count on 100%. It builds unbreakable bonds and security in your friendship when you can truly depend on each other .

“THE GREATEST ABILITY IS DEPENDABILITY.” – Bob Jones

JUST LISTEN

Friends live to add their 2 cents into your situations, especially when its asked. Sometimes though it’s really not wanted. Paying close attention to the person and validating their feelings is just as helpful. When difficult times arise do you really want the commentary even if you know they are right? Just don’t. Being the extra set of ears or shoulder to cry on can be enough and demonstrate support by just listening.

“DO NOT LISTEN WITH THE INTENT TO REPLY. BUT WITH THE INTENT TO UNDERSTAND.”

NON-JUDGEMENTAL

How far would your friendship go if your friend was judgmental about everything and anything you did? Being nonjudgemental can be one of the harder traits to learn how to obtain. It definitely takes practice and pulling out the empathy card every once in a while. A good way to practice is by trying to place yourself in your friends shoes. Yes, you may react to a situation differently, but you never know until you are in the situation yourself. Think about it….. (echo X 3)

“BE CURIOUS, NOT JUDGMENTAL.” – Walt Whitman

ENCOURAGEMENT

Your friends think you are awesome to begin with….DUH….It’s why you are friends. So why wouldn’t they be your biggest cheerleader when upcoming life events roll by. They remind you of how BOMB you really are and how you inspire so many others in the world. When it comes down to it, they want to see you do great and succeed in everything you aspire to do or be in life. Hey, they might as well hold a sign up saying biggest fan! Support and encouragement goes hand-in-hand in the friendship world.

“WHEN YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU CAN’T, TRY AGAIN…YOU JUST MIGHT SURPRISE YOURSELF…” – unknown

TRUST

Your secrets are safe and a real friend would never expose your vulnerabilities for personal gain or to hurt you. Good relationships are built on trust. That is why it is so important to know and pick your friends wisely.

“WHETHER IT’S FRIENDSHIP OR A RELATIONSHIP, ALL BONDS ARE BUILT ON TRUST. WITHOUT IT, YOU HAVE NOTHING.”  – unknown

  2. So sweet! I love seeing you two together! Reminds me of myself and MY bestie, Terry. I had the pleasure of seeing her last weekend, and although she lives near Boston, and we don’t see each other as much, we are right back to being 18 again!💕
